Miner’s Peak via the Ha Ling // Miner’s Peak saddle
Local Tips
Ha Ling Peak is unquestionably the busiest mountain in the Canmore area, bar none. In the summer months it’s not uncommon for the parking lot to fill up by 9 AM. One September long weekend, I topped out on the summit at sunrise and counted over 100 people between the Ha Ling // Miner’s Peak Saddle and the summit. If you are planning on running it, it’s a good idea to get there early and plan to share the trail with others.
The trail is maintained by Alberta Parks up to the saddle. The final 100 metres to the summit are unmaintained and many route variations are possible. Use caution for rockfall from other trail users.
The trail is popular year round and will be packed down within three days of fresh snowfall. It can get extremely windy beyond the trees at the start of the stairs section, so often the trail will be blown over from treeline to the summit. Microspikes are a good idea from the first snowfall in autumn and into springtime, as the trail can get very icy from the foot traffic.
