Local Tips
There are many different route variations. While the simplest way will require minimal hands-on scrambling, it is easy to end up in terrain that is much more challenging.
Beyond the upper meadow and just below the summit, there is a section of exposed, hands-on scrambling that winds through ledges covered in scree. If continuing through this section to the summit, take great care not to knock rocks down on those below you and what for rockfall from above. The footing can be quite slippery and demands respect.
Try to look back a few times on the way up so that you have a sense of how to descend. It is easy to get pulled too far left on descent and end up cliffed-out, or to end up too far left and have to navigate across exposed slabs or bushwhacking. Take your time to make sure that you are still on route. A GPS watch that has a breadcrumb trail can be helpful to find your way back down safely.
While nearby Ha Ling Peak is a popular winter objective, EEOR is much less so. The bottom of the trail may be packed down, but expect far less traffic through the winter. There is potential for wind slabs to form on the upper portion of the mountain in the winter, which can create avalanche conditions. Use caution if attempting in the winter.
The East End of Rundle provides access to the standard direction for people aiming to complete the famous Rundle Traverse. This is a serious mountain objective, with sustained sections of 4th and 5th class climbing in no fall terrain in rotten rock, which begins almost as soon as you leave the summit of EEOR. If considering this objective, ensure that you do adequate research and have the skills and fitness required for this undertaking. This route falls outside of the scope of Front Ranges and this trail guide, but many good (and many bad) resources exist out there.
