Rockies Trail Guide

Looking for inspiration about where to run in the Rockies? Use this guide to filter based on location and estimated duration to find your perfect running route around Canmore, Kananaskis, and Banff. This guide was designed with trail running in mind, but all of the trails are excellent options for hiking as well. Everyone moves at their own pace, so use this guide as a starting point only. For longer options, it’s possible to combine many of these trails for longer outings.

We’ve estimated duration based on an average pace of 6:00-7:00 min/km or 8-10 km/hr on flat, even terrain. For every 600 metres of elevation gain we’ve added an extra hour to the estimate. On average, plan to take 2-3 times as long as the suggested duration if you are hiking, depending on how many snack spots and photo opportunities you expect to take.

Trail conditions can change rapidly due to weather, construction, or wildlife. For trails in Canmore and Kananaskis, check out the Alberta Parks website for advisories and closures before heading out. For trails in the Banff and Lake Louise areas, visit Parks Canada for up to date information. Wherever it is applicable, this guide provides links to specific trail advisories and closures.
