Local Tips
There is no cell phone coverage for most of this route, so it’s a good idea to bring a satellite communication device or a phone that is enabled for satellite texting in case you run into trouble. It is a committing route in that there are no bailout options, so make sure that you’re comfortable covering the distance.
This route can be run in either direction, but the preferred direction is from Canmore to Banff which is predominately downhill. If you choose to run this route one-way from the Ha Ling Peak Trailhead, you will need to arrange for a shuttle to retrieve your bike or vehicle. Alternatively, starting your run from downtown Canmore and ending in Banff townsite extends this run to about 30 km + 600 m of gain total and allows you to take Roam Public Transit back to Canmore for $6 (as of 2026).
