Combining this route with the Spray Lakes Trail and Goat Creek Trail makes an almost perfect marathon distance (42 km, 760 m gain). Most people who complete this loop will do it in a clockwise direction, parking at the Canmore Nordic Centre and starting up the Spray Lakes Trail.

Local Tips

  • There are plenty of variations to reach the beginning of the Rundle Riverside Trail at the north end of the Canmore Nordic Centre. The route described here climbs gently up FYI into EKG, before linking to the Rundle Connector trail, making use of excellent single track. For a quicker approach to the start of the trail, follow Banff Trail the whole way out of the stadium to the warming hut to either gain the Rundle Connector. Alternatively, you can follow Banff Trail the whole way to the beginning of Rundle Riverside.

  • This route can be run in either direction, but the preferred direction is from Canmore to Banff which is predominately downhill. If you choose to run this route one-way from the Nordic Centre, you will need to arrange for a shuttle to retrieve your bike or vehicle. Alternatively, starting your run from downtown Canmore and ending in Banff townsite extends this run to about 22 km + 370 m of gain total and allows you to take Roam Public Transit back to Canmore for $6 (as of 2026).
